ABOUT

“Greetings, friend. Summon some courage and gather your belongings – your sword and your dice – for Middle-Earth is at war. Will you join the fight?” – Beruthel, Ranger of the North

Hello and welcome to the New Zealand Hobbit League. We are a nation-wide group of gaming and Tolkien enthusiasts who regularly meet for weekends of fun-filled Hobbit and Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game events – though we’re much more than that. Our events are also known for fantastic group dinners, pub quizzes, arcade gaming nights or bowling all topped off with an epic night out. Our Facebook page hosts monthly painting competitions, and two annual events: Hobbits on Parade and a map-based campaign of epic proportions.

New player friendly and always welcoming, our community has been commended by other gaming groups and clubs around the country for being absolute top quality. Everyone is well received, new or experienced, young or old – no matter what, you’ll find plenty of like-minded and affable Hobbits here.

Established in early 2014, the New Zealand Hobbit League continues to go from strength to strength with plenty of players all over the country. So dust off those miniatures, pick up the book or pop on the films and get involved in the fun.

We have a very active Facebook page, or you can find more information about events and activities on our Events page.

Matt Ridgely
League Coordinator

The founder. The First Man. The Godfather. Matt, formerly the Great Bearded One, established the New Zealand Hobbit League back in 2014, when it existed for the purpose of organising a few Wellington-based players. Now, with the years rolling by, the League has burgeoned into a nation-wide group that hosts events from Auckland to Dunedin, not to mention the Great Bearded One is now clean-shaven.

No longer in Wellington, Matt can be seen from time to time at events where he’s more than likely to be fielding the Fellowship, posting about the paint competition on the Facebook page or hosting the League Final. While he may be removed from the SBG epicentre, his passion and enthusiasm for the game remains strong.

Middle Earth being after all being full of strange creatures beyond count, George Costello must seem of little importance being neither being renowned as a great warrior nor counted among the very wise, in fact it has been remarked that George's only real passion is for food. A rather unfair observation as he has also developed an interest in the brewing of ales and the smoking of pipe weed. But where his heart truly lies is in peace and quiet and good tilled earth.

Josiah Abbott - First of his name, tamer of dragons, Lord of siege, conqueror of the seven kingdoms!

This here Siegelord carved his fortune of fine 28mm plastic molten! Birthed his conquests on the backs of six-eyed companionship and retracting yellow tongues of fire! His reckoning is swift, gaze - water-blended, and highlights un-reel! Tread carefully be it the bane of your hairless faces!

I don’t need any more little bits of plastic and metal, Ohhhhhhhhhh look, more little bits of plastic and metal!!!!!!!!!! Tis a battle, I like so many others are destined to lose.

I've been a SBG enthusiast since 2001 and still remember pre-ordering a Fellowship and Last Alliance sets! While no Siegelord you will see me at many of the league events. Painter, player, lover, little else needs saying really.

Being a relative late-comer to the New Zealand Hobbit League scene I wasn’t sure what to expect coming into my first event two years ago. Ever since, what I and I’m sure many others got and continue to get out of the NZHL has been nothing short of spectacular. For I met a wonderful group of like-minded, enthusiastic and most importantly friendly people through this seemingly unconventional hobby that has thrust us all together. Over these past 2 years the NZHL community, or family I dare say has become an important part of my life that I'm glad to share with anyone willing to give it a try.
